The approaching menace of a series finale is so great that not even superheroes can stop it. That said, IndieWire, Deadline, and Variety have all verified that the live-action series “Titans” and “Doom Patrol,” both based on DC Comics characters, will conclude with their current fourth seasons on HBO Max.
Each show’s initial six-episode run on the streaming service ended not too long ago, and the approaching second half of their fourth seasons will be the final chapters. Both are crafted to end the series on a satisfying note.
Titans and Doom Patrol, produced by Warner Bros. Television and Berlanti Productions,. Later, they moved to HBO Max after their two initial seasons when DC Universe went under.
Originating as original shows for DC Universe, a streaming platform devoted to superhero culture, both “Titans” (launched in 2018) and “Doom Patrol” (launched in 2019) feature unique backstories. They are the last live-action series to air in the now-defunct DC Universe and later moved to HBO Max after their two initial seasons when DC Universe went under.
The fourth and final season of “Titans” premiered in November, while that of “Doom Patrol” debuted in December on HBO Max. Each series has 12 episodes in its final season, divided into two sections of six episodes. Now, their teams have planned to wrap their respective story arcs with the second half of their fourth seasons.
A spokesperson from HBO Max confirmed the conclusion of these series, stating,
“While these will be the final seasons of ‘Titans’ and ‘Doom Patrol,’ we are very proud of these series and excited for fans to see their climactic endings. For four seasons, fans have fallen in love with the Titans and Doom Patrol, investing in their trials and tribulations and in their legendary battles saving the world time and time again.”
Set on the characters created by Arnold Drake and Bob Haney and illustrated by Bruno Premiani, “Doom Patrol” follows a motley crew of misfits who gain superpowers in bizarre circumstances and form a team to save the planet. Matt Bomer and Brendan Fraser provided the voices for two of the roles. The rest of the cast included Diane Guerrero, Matthew Zuk, April Bowlby, Riley Shanahan, Skye Roberts, Joivan Wade, and Michelle Gomez. Jeremy Carver, alongside Tamara Becher-Wilkinson and Chris Dingess, created the show for television and served as an executive producer. The Titan’s showrunner Greg Walker said:
“I’m immensely proud of our gifted cast, crew, and writing staff and their efforts in bringing to life all forty-nine episodes over the last five-plus years. I couldn’t have asked for better partners in Berlanti Productions, Warner Bros. Television, and HBO Max, and from the beginning, Geoff Johns and Akiva Goldsman. I’m incredibly grateful for their unyielding trust throughout this process. Lastly, I have to thank our incredible fans for their continued support, engagement, and the passionate community they’ve built around our show. We have six episodes left to unleash upon the world that we hope will give our beloved characters the creative closure we all know they deserve.”
Based on the superhero team of the same name, “Titans” was created by Berlanti and Johns alongside Akiva Goldsman for television. It starred Brenton Thwaites as Dick Grayson, Batman’s former sidekick who strikes out on his own to build his team. Besides Anna Diop and Teagan Croft, the cast also featured Joshua Orpin, Ryan Potter, Jay Lycurgo, Joseph Morgan, and Franka Potente. Greg Walker was the showrunner and executive producer for the show, together with Akiva Goldsman and Richard Hatem. Weed Road Pictures made it. Doom’s Petrol showrunner Jeremy Carver stated:
“To our wonderfully supportive partners at HBO Max, Warner Bros. Television, Berlanti Productions, and DC Studios, thank you for indulging us these past four seasons. Also, what were you smoking? To our brilliant cast, indomitable crew, fearless writing staff, and, most of all, to our beautiful fans: thank you all the more. You made this a once-in-a-lifetime ride.”
While James Gunn and Peter Safran, the new leaders of DC Studios, are excited to put their own stamp on the DC Universe, the announcement of the conclusion of both projects adds a whammy. Their stint may have ended, but HBO Max has already ordered a “Dead Boy Detectives” series in April 2022, so there is still one DC series in the pipeline.
