Secret Invasion Trailer Sees Nick Fury Become MCU’s Next Villain

Samuel L. Jackson’s journey with Marvel Cinematic Universe began in 2008 with his first appearance as Nick Fury in the franchise’s first post-credits scene attached to the end of Iron Man. Nearly 15 years later, Secret Invasion will finally be giving Fury a show of his own – a spy thriller that follows the events of the aftermath and ramifications of the shapeshifting Skrulls’ invasion of the planet. Even though the show will primarily follow Nick Fury, one dialogue from the latest teaser of the upcoming series potentially paints Fury as the MCU’s next antagonist.

In a conversation with Don Cheadle’s James Rhodes, Fury is exposed as a wanted man. Now, being a trailer, there isn’t much context given to the line, likely hinting that a Skrull used Fury’s appearance to commit unimaginable transgressions—which could be deduced from one of the many major explosions we see in the trailer.

Why do Skrulls invade in Secret Invasion?

Jackson revealed in a recent chat with Vanity Fair, an important motive behind the Skrull invasion. On a quest to create his own sleeper agents—the greatest in the entire world—Fury has been secretly working with a “good” faction of the shapeshifting extraterrestrial species.

“Nick had a whole Skrull spy network because they could shape-shift and go places that people couldn’t go,” Jackson disclosed to the magazine. “They kept their word. They worked for him, but he hasn’t done what he said he was going to do. They want a home. They want to live. They want to live like they are. They want to live in their skin. They don’t want to live in ours.”

He additionally states, “What he’s not doing is calling in his super friends. So that’s part of the whole dilemma, I mean, people want them and he’s not bringing them.”

Secret Invasion will come to Disney+ screens on the 21st of June, so stay tuned to find out more.
