The Game of Thrones franchise is buzzing with activity as the production of House of the Dragon Season 2 has officially commenced. House of the Dragon, the first spinoff series, has already started production on its second season. Showrunner Ryan Condal recently discussed the upcoming season at the Contenders TV event, and expressed his excitement for the next chapter in the series, emphasizing that the season would be more traditional in its storytelling and would delve into the Shakespearean or Greek tragedy that George R.R. Martin envisioned. Furthermore, Condal states that it will pick up where the previous season left off, following the civil war that erupted in Westeros.
“I’m excited to pick up where we left off,” stated Condal according to Deadline. “Now we get to fall into the more traditional rhythms of storytelling and Game of Thrones. We’ve always talked about this particular tale, George [R.R. Martin] has too, of being a Shakespearean or Greek tragedy. This series is very much about a house tearing itself apart from within. Now that all those pieces have been set on the board, I’m really excited to tell the next chapter, to see what happens now that Viserys is gone and no longer keeping a lid on things.”
Rhaenyra Targaryen is the rightful ruler, but Queen Alicent’s son has been crowned as king, leading to an inevitable clash between the two sides. Season 2 will delve further into the war, which is a significant part of George R.R. Martin’s written history of Westeros.
“House of the Dragon has returned,” boasted Condal in a statement with the commencement of the production of the second season. “We are thrilled to be shooting again with members of our original family as well as new talents on both sides of the camera. All your favorite characters will soon be conspiring at the council tables, marching with their armies, and riding their dragons into battle. We can’t wait to share what we have in store.”
While fans are eagerly anticipating the return to Westeros, they will have to wait until 2024 for the show to premiere on HBO.
