All you horror fans need to get ready to sink your teeth into an upcoming film that will explore the age-old question we’ve all been dying to know: “What would Dracula do on a boat?” The trailer for the movie, The Last Voyager of the Demeter is here at last.
The Last Voyage of the Demeter, directed by André Øvredal (Scary Stories To Tell in the Dark, Trollhunter) is based on a specific chapter from Bram Stoker’s “The Captain’s Log” from Dracula. The chapter tells the story of a ship voyaging to England whose crew vanished without a trace, and arrived in port without a single soul aboard. When asked what could possibly be the reason? Dracula. The film stars Corey Hawkins from (Straight Outta Compton), Aisling Franciosi (Game of Thrones, The Nightingale), Liam Cunningham (also of Game of Thrones), and David Dastmalchian (The Suicide Squad).
It’s going to be intriguing to find out what happens in the movie and whether its plot will follow the book’s ending of killing off every character on the boat. First up, it’s no surprise audiences will want to know if the child on the boat survives; I’m sure everyone hopes the dog survives at least?! It would be a bold and intriguing move to watch, for a studio horror flick to let the antagonist live and watch everyone else perish, followed by a grim credits roll. To be frank, we’re just going to have to wait and see what the filmmakers have in store for us.
On another note, while the seafaring setting offers up some exciting visuals, the trailer for The Last Voyage of the Demeter leaves some horror enthusiasts underwhelmed. Sure, we’ve never seen Dracula on a boat before, but the idea of a lethal force in a confined space, like in Alien, feels like an old cliche. While the trailer does have some exciting moments which include refreshing visuals based on the fact that it’s about a ship voyaging into the depths of the sea, it doesn’t quite hit the spot for horror flick fans, nor does it get us hyped for the movie’s release.
The Demeter will finally complete its long trip from Transylvania to London on August 11, when The Last Voyage of the Demeter finally arrives in theaters.
