Although there have been reports circling around for a long time about a Constantine sequel in development, Keanu Reeves is now seemingly being cagey when discussing or being interviewed about the long-awaited sequel. In a previous interview with ComicBook.com earlier this month, Reeves indicated how he and the filmmakers who helmed the first installment were trying to get the sequel made. In his most recent exchange however, he claims he’s unsure if it will actually happen.
Reeves’ latest chat with CinemaBlend revealed he doesn’t “know if it’s going to happen,” adding that “Hopefully I get to do it, but, I don’t know. Hopefully we can play.”
What rating will Constantine 2 be?
Taking into consideration the first film, it is highly probable that the film will be aimed at targeting adults with an R-rating. According to director Francis Lawrence, Constantine (2005) was significantly toned down from what he and others had hoped to achieve with the film.
“One of the biggest things for me about the first one was we followed, per Warner Bros., the rules to make a PG-13 movie in terms of violence, blood, language, sexuality. But the ratings board gave us a hard R based on their the gray zone of intensity,” Lawrence informed Collider last November. “And my big, big regret was that we have an R-rated movie that’s really a PG-13 movie. And if I was going to have to go have an R, I would have really made an R-rated movie. I would have made it much scarier and much more violent and I would have really made an R-rated movie.”
Additionally, he said, “The idea is this time, at least for me, is to really go at it and make a real R-rated Constantine which is, I think, what people always wanted originally, not the PG-13 version that just happens to get an R.”
If the movie does get the green light for production, it will most probably be part of the new DC Elseworlds offering, excluded from the continuity of the current new DC Universe. Matt Reeves’ The Batman: Part II, and Joker: Folie a Deux, directed by Todd Phillips, are also two additional movies that will eventually also receive the Elseworlds label.
Constantine (2005) is currently streaming on HBO Max. DC Studios has however not yet announced a release date or time frame for the sequel.
