James Gunn, DC Studios co-CEO, recently re-confirmed his meeting with Henry Cavill. Apparently, Cavil, the former DC Superman, might appear in a new DCU role in an upcoming project.
Gunn is now co-driving the super-powered franchise, steering DCU into a new era, Chapter 1, with a project called Gods and Monsters. Meanwhile, he has left much of the DCU stories to watch in the rearview.
Whatever happened with the Man of Steel’s Cavill perfectly reflects how Gunn has cleaned up the past. Everyone knows how the co-CEO announced the new Superman movie, pairing it up with the shocking news that it won’t be Cavill playng the new Superman.
The news was more of a shock due to its timing as Cavill was suiting up in a Superman sequel of his own, following a brief cameo in Black Adam. So what changed now?
What are James and Cavill up to?
Recently, James Gunn confirmed his conversation with Cavill in one of his replies to a fan on Twitter. Gunn elaborated that they are looking forward to finding a new DC role for the actor in near future.
Gunn also denied the rumor about Cavill playing Frankenstein in Creature Commandos, the animated HBO Max series. He said:
Completely false. We have our Frankenstein – our first choice – & it’s not Henry. Was never discussed with him.
On the other hand, he didn’t refrain from confirming that they have indeed discussed other roles, but Frankenstein is not one of them:
It is on various news sites & I was asked about it. You might consider that this bile in my post has more to do with your framing than what I’m saying. I’ve said in the past we’ve discussed other roles with Henry – just Frankenstein is not one of them.
Gunn’s statements align with DC Studios’ second co-CEO, Peter Safran’s comments:
But we just had a great meeting with Henry, and we’re big fans, and we talked about a number of exciting possibilities to work together in the future.
So, would cavil join the DC after all?
The current situation depicts that James Gunn and Peter Safran are willing to have Henry Cavill back in their new DCU Landescape. But we also now know that he won’t be playing either Superman or Frankenstein. So, what DC actually have in store for him?
The situation somewhat resembles what happened to DC alum Jason Momoa, who had a chance to move from his Aquaman role to Superman villain Lobo. However, while we could see Momoa’s enthusiasm to play the new antagonist character, Cavill might not be as excited. In Simpler words, the CEOs’ meeting with Cavill does not necessarily indicate any kind of agreement between both parties.
Well! It won’t shock the fans if Cavill shows he is done with the DC for now. He was asked to return in the Black Adams after years away from his Superman role. It would have given him the impression of a solid future for a place in the franchise in his known character. And certainly, the DC’s decision to pull him out of his red and blue would have disappointed him at a significant level.
We can assume that it could be Jor-El’s role if he shows any interest in participating in DCU projects. Playing Superman’s father would be a cool way to honor his work as the Man of Tomorrow. Even though it would not be a significant starring part, it would definitely serve as a tribute to his time as Man of Steel.
